The company I work for moved offices in 2007. We transitioned to an "open work space" environment. Everyone had a window view, and we were surrounded by floor to ceiling windows. We've watched the new twins stadium be constructed right outside our building. It's been nice. Of course, in these tough times, we're also doing everything that we can to save some money and that means condensing some floors. There are only about 6 people in the company that have offices (part of the "open work space" plan is that everyone has the same desk set up), and 3 of those offices are moving to the floor I sit on. Right now, I can turn my head and check the traffic of 94 as it enters onto 2nd Ave/4th St. But next week, I will turn my head and see a newly constructed office. I never realized how nice it was to be able to see outside during the workday until I could see outside. It's mostly just really nice to have natural light lighting up the office, but alas, our run of that will be over soon. A few of the other offices in the building are glass, so they don't block the light as much. But, I have a sad feeling that these offices will be solid walls and our nice bright work space will be turning into a sad dark work space.
You never realize how much light can make you happy until its gone.
Today is a sad day in my cube.
